In the 1980’s, an international treaty emerged to eliminate numerous substances that were deemed harmful to the earth’s ozone layer including R-22 refrigerant. R-22 refrigerant is considered a green-house gas and harms the environment when released into the air. That is why it is slowly being phased out and will longer be manufactured after 2020. Because of the impending phase-out, less R-22 refrigerant is being made. This has resulted in rapidly dwindling supplies and skyrocketing prices.

In older A/C and HP systems R-22 refrigerant can start leaking due to years of wear and tear, which causes valves, seals, coils or refrigeration components to fail. Even a small leak can reduce efficiency dramatically and shorten the equipment life. If you lose too much refrigerant your system cannot maintain the desired comfort level in your home. Lack of refrigerant can cause the indoor coil to freeze the condensate from the air and stop the airflow in your system. This has two major issues; the first causing un-repairable damage to the compressor, which is the most expensive component in your unit and second is possible water damage when the ice in the air handler melts and is too much for the drain system.

If you have had service on you’re A/C or HP this season and the diagnosis was low on refrigerant understand the cost of allowing your old system to operate with a leak.
