While it’s important to have your HVAC system professionally serviced on a regular basis, there are a few things you can do in between checks to keep your system functioning properly. Here is your HVAC To-Do list for this fall:
1. Check and replace your air filters.
The simplest and most important thing you can do at home is inspect your air filter. Old, dirty air filters make your HVAC system less efficient and cause undue strain on its parts. Typically, air filters should be replaced every 30 to 90 days, but you may need to change yours more if you have pets or keep the windows open often.
2. Keep your AC and heating systems free of debris.
As the leaves fall off the trees this season, you may find them collecting around your outdoor unit. Check your unit every week or so and clear the sticks, leaves, pollen, dirt and other debris out from the top and sides of your unit. Try to remove anything that blocks airflow to the system and leave about two feet of space around your unit.
3. Clean your registers.
Regularly check your registers and ducts for any dust or debris. Wipe down these surfaces with a cloth to keep them clean and working properly.
4. Give your system a break when possible.
Turning off your system for short periods of time can help extend the life of your system. If the weather is nice out, open the windows and use fans to circulate air throughout the house.
5. Know when to call a professional.
If you encounter any problems during your fall HVAC maintenance, it’s best to call a professional. You should also schedule your heating system check-up for sometime this fall. Our professionals will check your system for problems, adjust loose wires and connections, and address any other issues you may have.
Don’t be caught without a properly functioning HVAC system this season! Follow this checklist and then give us a call to schedule a professional check-up!
