Why is my air conditioner not working?

Reasons your air conditioner may not be working properly

Not that summer is upon us, the most common question we get is “Why is my air conditioner running but not cooling?”

There are many reasons why your AC is spitting out warm air instead of cool air. And many of them can be solved by air conditioning service.

Things you can do

The easiest things to check are your thermostat and air filter. Check the thermostat and make sure the fan is set to “auto” and not “on.” If it is the “on” position, then it will blow all the time, not just when fresh, cool air is needed.

Then make sure your air filter is clean. A dirty filter is more challenging to draw air through, making your unit work harder. This makes it difficult to keep your home at its desired temperature and can even make your evaporator coil freeze.

Things a professional will do

An air conditioner works by absorbing heat from the air in your house through the evaporator and transferring it outside through the condenser. However, the condenser can’t work properly if it’s dirty. A good cleaning by a professional HVAC tech will clear out debris and make it easier for it to transfer the heat outside where it belongs. The fan motor should also be checked to make sure it is running at optimal speeds.

A professional will also check refrigerant levels to make sure it’s not too low or leaking. The refrigerant circulates through the compressor and transfers heat from the air. If there isn’t enough refrigerant, the heat doesn’t transfer well. If the level is low, make sure to check for leaks or the problem will persist.

Another problem that may be sucking the cool air from your home is leaky air ducts. Have someone look and make sure the air is going where it needs to go, not into your crawl space or attic.
